Dr. Bernd Manfred Gawlik is Portfolio Leader for Water Quality at the European Commission’s Science and Knowledge Service, the Joint Research Centre. He was recruited by the European Commission in 1999 and holds an Engineer degree from the French Higher Institute for Industrial Chemistry and a Ph.D. on Natural Sciences from Technical University of Munich.
In the past two decades, he has been working on all major European environmental directives involving chemical monitoring. He is closely involved in the Common Implementation Strategy of the Water Framework Directive, umbrella under which he co-drafted i.a. the European Water Reuse Regulation. During the pandemic, he joined the European Commission’s Coordination Group on Covid-19, where together with colleagues at DG Environment and DG Sante as well as stakeholders in the sectors of public health and water sanitation has prepared the grounds for the EU Sewage Sentinel System for SARS-CoV-2. Currently, he works on the implementation of the respective EC Recommendation on wastewater-based surveillance on SARS-CoV-2, which aims at the establishment of a Digital European Collaboration Platform connecting ongoing national, regional and local surveillance activities.
Bernd, who closely and equally interacts with all actors around “water”, is author/co-author of more than 100 scientific papers, books and reports of the European Commission. He is also the Strategic Advisory Committee to UNEP’s World Water Quality Alliance as well as Member of the Water Expert Group of the Union for the Mediterranean.
