David Rowbotham is Clinical Director, National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network East Midlands, and Emeritus Professor of Anaesthesia and Pain Management, University of Leicester. He is also a member of the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network Advisory Council, NIHR Applied Research Collaboration East Midlands Board, and a Director of the British Journal of Anaesthesia (BJA).

In the past 12 years, he has dedicated much of his time working to improve the delivery of clinical research in the National Health Service (NHS). This includes improving clinical trial access for all patients, ensuring comprehensive and rapid regulatory approvals, improving cost efficiency, enhancing patient and researcher experience, attracting external investment, and embedding research in all NHS institutions.

Past responsibilities have included: Co-Chair, Clinical Senate NHS East Midlands; Clinical Director, NIHR Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network; Director of Research and Development, University Hospitals of Leicester; Council Member and Treasurer, Royal College of Anaesthetists; Dean, Faculty of Pain Medicine; Founding Chairman, National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia; Vice-President, Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland.

David has published widely in the areas of opioid pharmacology, development of novel analgesics, and assessment of novel techniques for pain management. He has edited, and contributed to, several textbooks, and founded the international CPD journal BJA Education.
