Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tsanko Gechev is the Director of the Center of Plant Systems Biology and Biotechnology in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. He is also teaching Molecular Biology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Plovdiv.
Dr. Gechev has degrees in Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and specializations in leading universities across the world: University of Gent (Belgium), Plant Research International and University of Groningen (The Netherlands), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich (Switzerland), University of Nebraska-Lincoln (USA), and the University of Potsdam (Germany).
Dr. Gechev’s research is currently focused on the following topics: 1) Reactive oxygen species as modulators of plant stress responses and programmed cell death; 2) Plant ageing; 3) Molecular mechanisms of desiccation tolerance in resurrection species.
He published more than fifty scientific articles and has coordinated ten projects amounting more than 30 Mil. EUR.
In 2017, Dr. Gechev won the Pythagoras prize by the Ministry of Education and Science of Bulgaria.
Dr. Gechev is a member of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria. He is Editor of Planta (Springer) and International Journal of Molecular Sciences (MDPI).
