Wastewater and Biotechnologies

Sewer surveillance has been a topic of growing significance for decades. However, mainly among practitioners and scientists. The events of last year COVID-19 pandemic have changed that and created a much bigger interest in screening wastewater for viral loads.

This atelier will reflect more widely on the sewer surveillance topic and its potential for understanding key environmental, epidemiological, sociological and other trends at a city or agglomeration level.

Then, a special emphasis will be placed on the next big threat– antimicrobial resistance and how we can raise the public’s awareness to create certain early warning mechanisms precisely through sewer surveillance.

Once more, we will speak about the development of EU-wide regulations (i.e. evolution of the UWWTD) and how various technologies address them.
